raffic in Central Jakarta will worsen in the coming weeks as the next phase of the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system gets underway, with a traffic lane shift on Jl. Thamrin and a footbridge demolition in Setiabudi.
Project operator PT MRT Jakarta says that construction at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle is currently making way for the in-progress MRT station's ventilation corridor on the western side of the site, after progress on constructing the ventilation corridor and station king post on the eastern side.
Starting on Monday, there was a shift in the work area from the eastern side to the western side, which will affect traffic lanes on Jl. Thamrin, extending from the Japanese Embassy building up to the Lippo Thamrin project site.
'The shift in the work site began [on Monday] in front of the Sinarmas Land building. This was done because there will be work on constructing the d-wall for the mechanical and electrical corridor on the west side. The traffic will be managed so that it will have minimal impact on the public,' PT MRT Jakarta said in a statement on Tuesday.
Work on the Thamrin sites will also include a road decking project in front of the Wisma Nusantara building. From 25 March to April 8, traffic on the southbound road in front of the building will be reduced by one lane, for 100 meters.
From April 9 to April 12, two lanes on the southbound road will be reduced for as far as 50 meters.
Meanwhile, April 30 and May 3 will see the reduction of one lane from the road in front of Wisma Nusantara once more, along the northbound road for 50 meters.
Aside from the Thamrin works, commuters can also expect more traffic problems in the Setiabudi area of Jl. Sudirman, as the demolition of an inactive footbridge will occur from the evening of March 29 until 4 a.m. on March 30.
The footbridge, located in front of the Da Vinci building and the Chase Plaza building, will force drivers toward alternative roads, both northbound and southbound on Jl. Sudirman.
PT MRT Jakarta says that it will coordinate with the Jakarta Police's traffic unit and the Jakarta Transportation Agency in handling the traffic. (dyl/nfo)(++++)
