ozens of employees of private lender Citibank Indonesia and their families sewed buttons on elementary school uniforms to be donated to the "Button Up!" social event in Jakarta on Sunday.
Through the event, which is part of its annual Citi Global Community Day, Citibank Indonesia aims to donate 10,000 school uniforms for poor school students.
"We want to support the government's 12-year compulsory education program," Citi Indonesia acting chief country officer Lauren Sulistiawati told The Jakarta Post in South Jakarta on Sunday.
Earlier, Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani stated the government would start the 12-year compulsory education program, which was aimed at giving all Indonesian children equal access to education, in June.
Cooperating with anti-drug foundation Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB), Citibank Indonesia will distribute the school uniforms to elementary schools in six cities, namely Bandung (West Java), Denpasar (Bali), Jakarta, Medan (North Sumatra), Semarang (Central Java) and Surabaya (East Java).
Citibank Indonesia will also cooperate with NGO Taman Bacaan Pelangi (Rainbow Reading Garden) by distributing children's books at its 29 libraries in eastern Indonesia.
"We have collected 1,000 books to be distributed," said Taman Bacaan Pelangi founder Nila Tanzil.
The Indonesia Museum of Records (MURI) listed the 'Button Up!' event as a record for the largest number of buttons sewn simultaneously in an event. (fsu/ebf) (++++)
