nline classified ads website OLX Indonesia attracted significant transactions in several of its popular categories in the first quarter of 2016, booking a 43 percent revenue growth from the previous period.
The website, which previously went under the name Tokobagus before merging with competitor Berniaga in 2014, saw revenue of Rp 73 trillion in the first quarter of 2016, soaring 43 percent from
Rp 51 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2015.
Its number of transactions also soared by 18 percent, from 1.4 million transactions a month to 1.6 million a month over the same two periods.
Most of the gains were due to consistent demand in its major categories: gadgets, automotive, services, job opportunities, commercial real estate and hobbies.
The biggest gain came from the real estate category and job offers with the number of responses posted increasing by 56 percent and 53 percent, respectively, from the previous quarter. Trailing in third place was advertised services with 42 percent growth.
The site also described domestic automotive consumer patterns, with observations showing that the average Indonesian OLX user upgraded their car every four years, while the average motorcyclist upgraded their motorbike every two years.
OLX Indonesia chief executive officer Daniel Tumiwa noted that the rising numbers indicated a public that was gaining more confidence in online transactions, as well as becoming more familiar with buying used goods.
Daniel also noted during the website’s 10th anniversary festivities earlier in the week that he hoped OLX would finally start running at a profit in 2016.
Currently, OLX has 20 million customers and over 900,000 sellers.
In terms of advertising revenue, the company a saw a 20 percent increase in the number of classified ads posted on the site in the first quarter of this year to 4.8 million ads per month.
Communications and Information Ministry data indicates that e-commerce transactions in Indonesia are set to reach US$4.8 billion by the end of 2016, higher than the US$3.5 billion reached in 2015. Indonesia’s e-commerce transactions are predicted to reach US$130 billion by 2020.
OLX, which was established in Argentina and is now headquartered in New York City, operates in around 40 markets worldwide, with an active global user base of 260 million per month.
Aside from Indonesia, OLX has been named the largest classified ads website in markets like India, Brazil and Poland as well.
