The Royal Navy’s HMS Richmond is slated to arrive in Jakarta on Wednesday while the Spanish Navy’s Mendez Nunez will conduct an open ship on Friday.
HMS Richmond is a Type 23 frigate and was launched on April 6, 1993. Officially commissioned on June 22, 1995, Richmond is one of 16 Type 23 frigates ordered by the Royal Navy, with eight of the frigates have been decommissioned.
Another three frigates are operated by the Chilean Navy.
HMS Richmond is one of four frigates being constructed at Swan Hunter Shipbuilders in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, England. Another 12 frigates were built by Marconi Marine (Yarrow Shipbuilders Limited) in Scotstoun, Glasgow, Scotland.
The Type 23 frigates were divided into two variants, the General Purpose (GP) and the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) frigates. HMS Richmond is one of the ASW frigates. The Chilean frigates are all ASW frigates.
The Type 23 frigate has a length of 133 meters with a beam of 16.1 meters and a draft of 7.3 meters.
