oekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, will soon be home to fine artwork, including a giant Garuda statue and several installations, made by local artists from across the country.

The project is part of an ambitious plan to establish a new state-of-the-art terminal, called Terminal 3 Ultimate, the development of which will cost Rp 7 trillion (US$525.92 million).

“There should be a differentiation between Soekarno-Hatta and other airports. If we want to compete in terms of technology or money, we might lose. Hence, I want to bring differentiation in terms of local wisdom,” state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II president director Budi Karya Sumadi said in Jakarta on Thursday.

The distinctive terminal, which is in the final stage of construction, is set to begin operations on June 20, while AP II is still awaiting a permit from the Transportation Ministry.

Boasting 422,804 square meters, the terminal, an extension of the existing Terminal 3, will pamper travelers with a wide range of luxurious lounges, restaurants and retail outlets.

The new terminal will entertain travelers with an artistic interior and various works of art by maestros such as I Nyoman Nuarta, Eko Nugroho, Nasirun, Angki Purbandono, Awan Simatupang, Edi Prabandono, Galam Zulkifli, Ichwan Noor, Nus Salomo, Pintor Sirait, Sardono W. Kusumo and art trio Tromarama. (vps/ags)
