T

he Integrated Election Law Enforcement Center is expected to prevent vote buying that will potentially occur during the simultaneous regional elections to elect governors, mayors and regents on Feb. 15, 2017, Attorney General H. M. Prasetyo has said.

The center, whose personnel would come from the National Police, the Attorney General’s Office and Election Supervisory Body will be able to closely monitor possible electoral violations by candidates and their campaign teams, and impose punishment against violators, Prasetyo said on Thursday.

"[We will] intensify the communication and cooperation among related agencies that support the law enforcement center to maximize efforts to up hold the election law ," Prasetyo told the journalists.

“Since vote buying will potentially occur among the candidates, the officials should cooperate to prevent and tackle such foul play [in the elections],” he added.

Prasetyo expressed his confidence that the center's coordinated efforts of three institutions to organize fair regional elections would be able to enforce the law and to impose strict sanctions against violators, including possible disqualification from an election race, as well as criminal charges.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto also stressed the need for the law enforcement center to ensure free and fair democratic elections. (bbn)
