Naval cadets from several ASEAN countries are taking part in a month-long journey on board an Indonesian training ship, the legendary 64-year-old tall ship KRI Dewaruci, to enhance cooperation among cadets.

The journey started on Sept. 10 and is to end on Oct. 20 in Surabaya, East Java, where more than 70 cadets are to conduct an integrated practical navigation exercise. The route is from Surabaya to Mataram to Bali to Makassar to Balikpapan to Semarang and back to Surabaya.

The cadets reached Makassar on Tuesday, Indonesian Navy chief spokesman Commodore Edi Sucipto said in a media statement on Wednesday.

The event aims “to nurture relationships among cadets as the young generation in ASEAN countries under the ‘Seamen’s Brotherhood’ with an everlasting experience as preparation to be future leaders in the region,” Edi said.

Earlier the cadets from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand participated in a seminar on Sept. 8 and 9 at the Indonesian Naval Academy (AAL) in Surabaya.

Other activities during the voyage include courtesy calls to high-ranking military officers and civilian authorities, tourism visits, open ship, cultural performances and country presentations.
