Peruvian woman could face the death penalty after allegedly attempting to smuggle Rp 10 billion (US$614,977) worth of narcotics into Bali, the latest in a string of drug trafficking cases involving foreigners on the resort island.

The 42-year-old woman, identified only as NSBC, was arrested at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on Aug. 12 after authorities allegedly found more than 1.4 kilograms of cocaine and 33.9 grams of ecstasy in her possession.

Bali Police narcotics director Sr. Comr. Radiant said NSBC had arrived at the airport around 11:30 p.m. on a Qatar Airways flight from Barcelona, Spain, with a layover in Doha.

“Although the X-ray machine did not detect anything suspicious in her luggage, customs officers found her behavior suspicious and decided to conduct a body search,” Radiant said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"During the body search they found three packages of drugs hidden in her underwear and inside a sex toy concealed in her body," he added.

According to Radiant, NSBC was allegedly recruited by a Peruvian man, identified only by the initials PB, who is currently residing in Bali.

The two reportedly connected through a forum on the dark web in April, when PB is said to have offered NSBC $20,000 to smuggle drugs into the popular tourist destination.
