T Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) will operate some 2,300 new buses next year if its plan to procure the necessary buses can be arranged smoothly.
Transjakarta president director Antonius Steve Kosasih said on Thursday that with the disbursement of Rp 700 billion (US$50.78 million) from the city administration, his company could begin to procure buses for 2016.
The capital injection was allocated in the 2015 Jakarta city budget.
According to Antonius, his company had met with the management of city-owned Bank DKI to discuss a loan to purchase buses. In order to secure the loan, he added, his company had had to invest between Rp 300 and 400 billion with the bank so that it could receive a loan of around Rp 1.2 trillion.
“With the Rp 1.2 trillion loan, we could purchase 800 diesel-powered buses in 2016,” said Antonius in Jakarta on Thursday as reported bykompas.com, adding that he expected that private operators would be able to buy 1,500 buses next year.
Antonius stressed that the sluggish disbursement process from the city administration had resulted in the failure of city-owned bus rapid transit (BRT) management to buy 1,000 buses in 2015.
Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said previously that the city faced an emergency shortage of buses due to the failure of Tranjakarta to purchase buses. Due to the bus procurement failure, the company has had to operate substandard buses. (bbn)
