ietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast announced on Thursday that it had located a site for its flagship factory in Indonesia, where it aimed to churn out up to 50,000 cars per year.

Speaking on May 16 at a press briefing in Hanoi, VinFast Indonesia CEO Temmy Wiradjaja said the designated site spanned 170 hectares, but he declined to say where it was located.

“At this moment, we are in the process of acquiring the land. We plan to invest around US$200 million in this factory in the first phase,” he said.

Asked why the Indonesian factory would have just 17 percent of the capacity of VinFast’s 335-ha factory in Hai Phong near the Vietnamese capital, even though it was more than half as large, Temmy said production would be increased gradually without adding more land.

The Indonesian factory would focus on assembling electric cars for the domestic market, but Temmy explained there was a possibility it could expand into producing electric motorcycles also.

“Speaking about electric motorcycles, I think it’s in line with our mission to create a more sustainable future for everyone. I think we will do that [too], but of course at this moment, we want to focus on cars,” he added.
