Buni Yani, the uploader of the edited video footage which contains the alleged blasphemous remark by Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, filed a motion for a pretrial hearing to the South Jakarta District Court on Monday after being named a suspect for allegedly disseminating hate speech on the internet on Nov. 23.
uni Yani, the uploader of the edited video footage which contains the alleged blasphemous remark by Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, filed a motion for a pretrial hearing to the South Jakarta District Court on Monday after being named a suspect for allegedly disseminating hate speech on the internet on Nov. 23.
"We filed for a pretrial today because the naming of Buni as suspect as well as his arrest were not in line with the proper criminal procedure and several regulations issued by the National Police," Buni's lawyer, Aldwin Rahadian told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
Previously, former Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono said a particular caption Buni had transcribed in his video, which removed the word “used” from Ahok's speech, had ignited public hatred and animosity.
Buni has been charged under Article 28 of the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law that carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
Buni, who was reported to Jakarta Police by Ahok's supporters, said he had uploaded the video only for the purpose of discussion with his Facebook friends.
However, Buni had admitted to failing to include the word "used" for the caption in question. (dmr)
