resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo promised to put the best candidates forward for a team that will vet names for the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) next leaders, as activists are calling on the outgoing president to prove his commitment to fighting corruption.
Jokowi’s 10-year tenure has been marred with a historic decline in Indonesia’s fight against corruption.
With the current roster of five KPK leaders set to step down in December this year, Jokowi is forming a nine-member selection panel, which will vet candidates to lead the agency for the next five years and present their names to the House of Representatives for confirmation.
State Secretary Pratikno on Monday reportedly presented to Jokowi a shortlist of 20 candidates for the selection team, which will be filtered down to five members from the government, and four members from civil society.
Asked by reporters about who will make the cut, Jokowi said on Tuesday that he will pick those with high “integrity and dedication to corruption eradication”.
“We have just started looking for potential names [to sit on the selection panel]. We will finish it by June,” Jokowi said. “There are a lot of [names that are up for the job], it’s just a matter of selecting them.”
According to prevailing laws, the selection panel’s first job after its formation will be to announce a two-week registration period for candidates looking to join the KPK leadership.
