Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari visited Indonesia on March 7 to attend the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Leaders’ Summit in Jakarta.
On the sidelines of the Summit, Ansari held a bilateral meeting on Tuesday with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to discuss the progress of strategic ties between India and Indonesia. Both countries established a strategic partnership in 2005. He also met with Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
While speaking at the IORA Summit, Ansari praised Indonesia for successfully leading the IORA and hosting the first ever Leaders’ Summit.
“The Vice President of India appreciated the visionary leadership of Indonesia and said that India shares the vision of a peaceful region. He called upon the IORA member states to ensure that the freedom of navigation and over-flight in the Indian Ocean would be respected by all, as an expression of our commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea [UNCLOS],” the Indian Embassy in Jakarta stated in a press release.
India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Gen (ret) VK Singh attended the IORA Council of Ministers’ Meeting on March 6, while a 34-member Indian business delegation attended the IORA Business Summit on the same day.
