T

he quality of the recently constructed Supadio International Airport building in West Kalimantan has been put into question following the collapse of the ceiling in the airport’s waiting room on Sunday afternoon.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

This is the second time a ceiling has collapsed at the airport, set to be officially opened in April.

The first collapse occurred just six days ago, on March 21.

“Currently, we are fixing and investigating the incident,” said Bayuh Iswantoro, the general manager of airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II, at Supadio International Airport on Sunday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Witnesses said people rushed to the sides of the waiting room when the ceiling collapsed at around 3 p.m.

The debris then scattered over the chairs.

West Kalimantan Welfare Labor Confederation group chairman Suherman criticized the authorities for the apparently shoddy construction job.

“We allege corruption in the airport construction process. The collapse of the ceiling indicates corruption in the project.”

Suherman argued that the project had been constructed carelessly without considerations of quality.

He said he hoped the related institutions would investigate the contractors involved in the multi-billion rupiah project, which was set to be the pride of West Kalimantan. (hol)
