A ferry carrying 19 passengers and three crewmen exploded on Thursday morning in the waters of Ayer, Thousand Islands regency.

North Jakarta Firefighting and Rescue Agency head Satriadi Gunawan said the ferry, Zevolution 9 Princes Debble, burst into flames at 8.30 am. It had departed from Marina dock in Ancol and was bound for Ayer Island, Putri Island, Pelangi Island and Macan Island.

“On their way, a fire broke out in the engine room and quickly spread,” Satriadi said on Thursday as quoted by beritajakarta.com.

He added that all passengers had been evacuated by water police officers with the help of local fishermen.

His agency, Satriadi said, deployed a fire rescue boat to extinguish the flames, which took about an hour.

“Police are still investigating the cause of the fire,” he said.

Thousands Island Police spokesperson First Insp. Ferry Budiharso said that one of the passengers suffered from burns on his arm. (fac)
