Police are investigating two explosions at a local policeman's home in Mojokerto, East Java, that destroyed the structure and killed two relatives in a house next door, with the preliminary probe pointing to a leaking cooking gas canister as a likely cause.
he Mojokerto Police have opened an investigation into one of its officers after two massive explosions at his home leveled the structure and killed two relatives who lived in an adjacent house.
Mojokerto Police chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Ihram Kustarto said the National Police's internal affairs division was questioning Second Adj. Insp. Maryudi to uncover the cause of the fatal explosion.
"We're investigating all aspects, including his personal and professional life," Ihram said on Sunday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
He added that investigators were currently focusing on Maryudi’s hobby of tinkering with electronics, and that the East Java Police's forensics team had confiscated several electronic devices from Maryudi's home for analysis.
The series of powerful blasts occurred at around 9 a.m. on Monday at Maryudi's home in a densely populated area in Sumolawang village, Puri district. The incident occurred when Maryudi and his wife were at work and their children were at school.
Neighbors said they heard a loud explosion, followed by a second, quieter blast. They also reported smelling sulfur or gunpowder emanating from the incident site.
The blasts destroyed 95 percent of Maryudi's two-story house and damaged three neighboring houses, while six other buildings in the area suffered minor damage.
