ixty candidates looking to become the new leaders of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) will take part in a two-day public debate, which is set to run from May 17 to 18.

In the debate, they will have to directly convince the public about their competence and commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights.

The public debate will be organized by a selection team, which was assigned to recruit candidates to replace the current commissioners, whose terms end this year.

Selection team head Jimly Asshidiqie said by giving them a chance to speak in an open forum, where citizens could directly raise questions to them, the team could gather as comprehensive as possible information on the candidates.

“We welcome anyone to attend the public debate and get involved in examining the candidates,” Jimly told journalists at Komnas HAM headquarters in Central Jakarta on Saturday.

“The public debate is part of our efforts to carefully track the records of the candidates before we select finalists to attend interviews at the House of Representatives,” he added.

The 60 candidates to participate in the upcoming public debate were selected after they passed a written test on May 2. The candidates will have to face another interview session with the selection team after the public debate in order to get 14 finalists who will face members of the House’s Commission III overseeing law and human rights in October this year.
