Singapore has implemented app-based shuttle services to serve areas with a limited number of passengers.
The Singapore Government Technology Agency has used Beeline app for over a year. The app implements a crowdsourcing method to initiate the routes before assigning shuttle bus operators, said the agency’s data science division director, Feng-Yuan Liu, in Singapore on Wednesday.
The shuttle routes use medium buses to cover areas not served by ordinary buses due to limited passenger numbers. There are currently eight operators, including small and medium enterprises and family businesses, partnering with the agency.

The software provides users with a booking and tracking system, while bus drivers are informed of when to pick up passengers.
The platform also provides data analytics to determine whether a route is profitable. There are more than 100 routes provided. "The schedule is flexible, after one to two months if it turns out to not be profitable, it can be adjusted," Liu added. Liu said the software-based routes were limited to smaller and less dense areas while the major, bigger bus routes were still under the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA). (bbn)
