resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has promised to kick-off next year the expansion of Notohadinegoro Airport in Jember regency, East Java, for completion by 2019, said a press statement released on Sunday.

“We are ready to renovate the airport. We will extend the runway and expand the terminal,” said the President during his visit to the regency on Aug. 13.

Jokowi said separately that the central government was preparing funds for the project and had already allocated between Rp 300 billion and Rp 400 billion in the 2017 draft state budget.

Jokowi said renovating the airport was expected to boost investment and tourism in Jember and its neighboring cities.

During his visit to Jember, President Jokowi and First Lady Irina also attended the 16th Jember Fashion Carnival 2017's Wonderful Archipelago Carnival Indonesia (WACI), which was organized by the Indonesian Carnival Association.

The annual event has become more popular in recent years, as it presents the unique fashions of this country. This year, it presented the carnival on a 3.6-kilometer runway featuring 10 national themes: the Sriwijaya Empire, Bali, King of Papua, Mystical Toraja, Siger Crown Lampung, Borneo, Chronicle of Borobudur, Mythical Toraja, Wonderful Betawi and Unity in Diversity.
