akarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat will allow schools to perform animal slaughtering on Idul Adha, on Sept. 1. The practice had been previously banned by his predecessor, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.

Ahok advised schools against holding animal slaughtering during the holiday in 2015, citing health concerns. His statement was considered by many as interfering with Islamic traditions.

Djarot said on Monday that he would allow residents to slaughter the animals around the school areas under the condition that good waste processing was implemented.

“Why not? If they have good waste processing, they can slaughter the animals at schools,” Djarot said at City Hall, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

He said the prohibition of animal slaughtering at public facilities such as roads or sidewalks was still valid.

Djarot said he saw some sacrifice slaughtering on the sidewalks last year, when slaughterers misused sidewalks to prop up the animals’ necks.

People across the country traditionally slaughter animals in public places during the holiday. (dra)
