egional Representatives Council member Andi Mappetahang (AM) Fatwa has passed on Thursday after battling liver cancer. He was 78 years old.

DPD information officer Nana confirmed that Fatwa had died at the Metropolitan Medical Centre in South Jakarta, where he was being treated.

“Yes, [he died of] liver cancer,” Nana was quoted in the kompas.com report. She added that Fatwa had passed away at about 6 a.m.

Fatwa was once jailed under the authoritarian Soeharto regime, when he, along other activists in the 1980s, signed the Petisi 50 (50 Petition) that criticized Soeharto’s abuse of power.

Fatwa's body is now laid out at his residence in Pejaten, South Jakarta.

His daughter Dian Islamiati, a senior journalist with ABC Radio Australia, said her father would be buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery. (jun)
