he Ngurah Rai International airport in Denpasar, Bali has received requests for 477 additional flights from domestic airlines to accommodate the high demand for domestic routes in the lead-up to the Christmas and New Year holiday season.
“At the end of the year, Bali is always a favorite destination for both domestic and international tourists,” Ngurah Rai airport general manager Yanus Suprayogi said on Monday as quoted by Antara.
The additional flights were requested by five domestic airlines — Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Nam Air and Sriwijaya Air — with a total of around 80,000 seats available.
“The most requested route is to Surabaya with 182 additional flights, then Lombok with 112 and Jakarta with 81,” he said.
The number of additional domestic flights requested has fallen by about 22 percent from last year’s 613.
Yanus said that the decrease was likely due to the uncertainty around Mount Agung’s volcanic activity.
International routes have also been affected. There have yet to be any requests for additional international flights from either foreign or domestic airlines.
“We hope that [additional] international routes will follow, but so far [the airlines] haven’t requested any,” he said. (kmt/dmr)
