West Jakarta Police have named a man a suspect for allegedly starting a fire that made over 2,400 people in Tamansari homeless.

West Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Hengky Haryadi said after questioning the man, as well as a number of witnesses and experts, the police had gathered enough evidence to name him the sole suspect.

"He [admitted] that he set his bed on fire with a gas lighter," Hengky said as quoted by kompas.com on Monday.

Hengky went on to say that the perpetrator set the bed on fire after hearing a whisper.

The blaze, which took place in the early hours of Saturday morning, rampaged through at least 268 houses in seven neighborhood units in the subdistrict, prompting authorities to set up tents to temporarily house inhabitants of the densely populated area.

The Fire and Rescue Agency deployed 38 fire trucks and managed to extinguish the flames after nine hours. (fac)
