Pondok Aren Police have confiscated 20 cars and arrested three men under fraud charges in Tangerang, Banten.
The three suspects, Agung Ari Wibowo, 38, Ilham, 52, and Supardi, 45, were detained on Wednesday.
South Tangerang Police chief Sr. Comr. Fadli Widianto said on Wednesday that victims had reported the suspects for failing to return cars rented from them.
“Their modus operandi was to rent a car for one month for Rp 4 million [US$280]. After the time is up, the suspects disappeared and couldn’t be contacted,“ said Fadli, as quoted by tempo.co.
Fadli added that the suspects had stolen a total of 42 cars that way in a number of areas since March 2017.
We have detained the suspects for further questioning, and we are currently searching for the rest of the cars.”
The suspects are charged under articles 378 and 372 of the Criminal Code on fraud and embezzlement, violations of which can be punished with up to four years in jail. (jlm)
