50-meter-long crack has appeared in a road in Kebon Manggis subdistrict in Matraman, East Jakarta. Residents of Berlan village said a crack had appeared in the same spot several times before.

“We’ve patched up the crack with concrete, but it keeps recurring,” RT 012 head Herry said on Wednesday. The damaged road is located in RT 012 (neighborhood unit) RW 03 (community unit).

“We heard a loud cracking sound on Saturday night that we thought it was an earthquake. It turned out that it was the crack in the road. We then rushed to notify the subdistrict head,” he added, kompas.com reported.

Kebon Manggis subdistrict head Mesrarianita said the Matraman Bina Marga road agency’s attempt to patch up the crack with asphalt had been unsuccessful. The crack stretched toward the Ciliwung River.

“The current road restoration project involves other parties like the BBWSCC [Ciliwung-Cisadane Flood Control Office], the Water Management Agency and the East Jakarta mayoralty. Our main attempt is to build a gabion wall near the landslide-prone village,” she said.

“Some people assume it was caused by heavy equipment and trash trucks that frequently pass the road,” she added.

Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency head Harry Tirto Djatmiko has given assurances that the crack was not caused by a natural disaster.

“If it was due to an earthquake, the agency would have detected it beforehand and the impact would not have been only in Matraman,” he said. (vla)
