One dead, five injured after whirlwind hits Dairi

ne person has been killed and five others injured in Dairi, North Sumatra, after a whirlwind roared through the regency on Monday afternoon, destroying buildings and homes.
The deceased victim is Rikson Girsang, a resident of Siboras village in Pegagan Julu I subdistrict, while the injured victims are from Rangkom and Parbuahan villages.
Dairi regent KRA Johny Sitohang Adinegoro said Rikson's death was caused by the collapse of a building.
The regent said the Dairi administration had provided financial assistance to the family of the victim. All injured victims have received treatment from medical teams.
Johny said the whirlwind had been reported to Social Affairs Minister Idrus Marham. “Many houses and houses of worship have been damaged,” he said, Tuesday.
According to Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) data, the number of buildings damaged reached more than 100, including houses, churches and schools.
Sarmalia br Sagala, 45, a Rangkom village resident, told The Jakarta Post that she was working on her farmland not far from her house when the incident occurred. She was shocked when she heard a booming sound coming from the roof of her house.
Sarmalia said the whirlwind had destroyed the roof of her house and damaged her grocery store and several electronic devices.
“The incident happened very fast but destroyed many things. Every house in our neighborhood was hit,” she said, adding that she hoped the government would help the residents to repair their houses. (ebf)
