he bodies of two truck drivers who had been crushed by a steel roll weighing 25 tons under the Pluit toll road in North Jakarta were finally removed on Thursday afternoon after being trapped for eight hours.
The steel roll had fallen off a truck during a collision with another truck.
The two men, Sukroni, 59, and Deriawan, 30, had been resting at a small shelter under the toll road when the incident happened. Another man, Budi Santoso, was severely injured.
North Jakarta Police traffic accident unit head Adj. Comr. Sigit Purwanto said the evacuation could only be conducted on Thursday afternoon because it had taken some time for the police to locate a crane large enough to lift the steel roll.
“We had to look for a crane that can lift a 25-ton steel roll. Also, the accident happened at dawn, when most crane operators were sleeping,” Sigit said as quoted by kompas.com.
The evacuation took 45 minutes. Sukroni’s and Deriawan’s bodies were taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.
The driver of the truck carrying the steel roll had also been injured in the accident. (cal)
