The guideline, for example, obliged developers to specially position buildings in such a way that minimized damage during a disaster.
uthorities have implemented a natural disaster resistance guideline for buildings and the environment in the Mandalika Tourism Special Economic Zone, which is located along the coastline of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
The Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), a state-owned company tasked with developing Mandalika, considered it important to anticipate the impacts of tsunamis and earthquakes in the region.
“[Compliance to the guideline] is an obligation for operators and investors before starting construction in Mandalaika,” The ITDC’s construction and operation director, Ngurah Wirawan said, adding that the guideline, which has been effective since early July, was one of the ITDC’s main programs in developing the area.
The program, he added, was based on the ITDC’s experience in developing the Nusa Dua Bali tourist area for more than 40 years and the series of earthquakes that hit Lombok in 2018.
The guideline, for example, obliged developers to specially position buildings in such a way that minimized damage during a disaster.
“We also offer features like pools and lagoons to reduce the strength of tsunami waves as well as heavy structure features to function as barriers for materials carried away by tsunamis” Wirawan said.
Apart from that, a building of international standard must also have a meeting point of a particular height.
