At least six students were killed and dozens others went missing after a flash flood reportedly swept away more than 250 students who were trekking on the banks of the Sembor River in Donokerto village in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on Friday, the nation's disaster mitigation agency has said.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Agus Wibowo said the victims were seventh and eighth graders of Turi 1 junior high school taking part in scouting activities. As many as 257 student participants went on the trek despite the weather conditions.

“When the students were alongside the river, a sudden flood with torrential currents occurred and swept away the students. At the moment, a joint team involving a search and rescue team and the Sleman Police is still searching for the victims,” Agus said.

The local disaster mitigation agency and military personnel are also assisting in the emergency rescue.

The situation was still developing and the final number of students affected by the incident had yet to be finalized, Agus said.
