ollowing the success of Indonesian Charms Generation (GenPI) Central Java’s Karetan Market, GenPI West Sumatra (Sumbar) is coming up with a similar event called Siti Nurbaya Market.

The market will be available on Nov. 26 at Gunung Padang soccer field, Muaro Padang and will feature events and activities like Jajanan Minang Festival, Permainan Anak Nagari, Minang Art and vlog and Instagram competition. The concept of this market is a traditional culinary market that sells old-school dishes.

Some of the traditional dishes and drinks offered at the market are lamang tapai, banana fried with sticky rice, kolak pisang, kolak ubi, lontong gulai paku and cubadak, lontong pical, satay, soto, Solok Rajo coffee, sorbat, bandrek, daun kawa and many more.

All of these culinary delights will be made by the women of Family Welfare Movement (PKK).

“The Siti Nurbaya Market isn’t just a concept, it really is a market. It is designed to look as appealing as possible to make it social media friendly and Instagrammable,” said GenPI Sumbar coordinator Aris Purnama.

The market is adapted from a novel titled Siti Nurbaya about the legend of Mount Padang, written by Marah Rusli.

Mount Padang and Batang Arau are the icons of Padang City. The latter was once the busiest port on the western coast of Sumatra Island.

“Up to this day there are still old buildings located along Batang Arau, proof that this area was once a trade center,” Aris added.

There will be spots available to take photos that will be decorated with sepeda ontel, decorated boat, bendi, old-school pelaminan Minangkabau and many more.

“There are going to be performances of piring, payung, randai, silek and balance madam dances. The latter one is a rare dance from the Spanish royals,” Aris said.

According to Aris, Siti Nurabaya Market will be held three times a month but if it is well received by the people, there’s a plan to hold it weekly. (asw)
