2016 US presidential election campaign period heavily influences the new season of House of Cards.
f there is one thing everyone can agree on is that the 2016 US presidential election campaign period heavily influenced the new season of House of Cards.
The trailer for the fifth season begins with a chilling voiceover. "The American people don't know what's best for them, I do," states the now President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey).
After four seasons watching the Underwoods get away with all their murder and scheming, viewers agree that maybe it is time to see Frank and his wife Claire (Robin Wright) finally receive the consequences. American people also think so, judging by the heated rally shown briefly in the trailer. One cannot help but chuckle upon seeing a protest sign saying “Not my president” taken straight from reality.
The last season of House of Cards ended in the middle of the campaign season between Underwood and William Conway (Joel Kinnaman), who like Donald Trump is a Republican from New York with an immigrant wife. The media-savvy Conway offers a new face against the establishment run by Underwood.

But it seems like our-love-to-hate President is not going anywhere soon.
"Lucky for them, they have me," says Underwood. The trailer shows a peek of the electoral college results, in which Frank has a lead over Conway with only two states left. Even more terrifying than another four years under Underwood is either the prospect of “One nation, Underwood” until 2040 or how many bodies Frank and Claire will sacrifice to achieve that.
Coming out on May 30, the fifth season of House of Cards will help us “write [our] wildest dream”, replacing the bizarre presidency that is Donald Trump with a more terrifying one. (kes)
