Hundreds fail final national exam

O

ne-thousand-and-ninety-three senior high school students in Bali failed to pass the National Examination (UN) test, Bali Education Agency head I Wayan Suasta said Sunday.

Wayan said the number was much higher than the failure figure recorded in 2009's National Examination. Last year, only 66 students failed the exam from a total of 38,028 students. This year, the total number of participants was 40,987.

From the 1,093 students who failed the exam, 702 were from general senior high schools and 391 from vocational senior high schools.

"Sadly, a large number failed the Bahasa Indonesia exam," he said.

"The pass percentage decreased from the percentage of last year."

This year, 97.25 percent of participants from general senior high schools passed the exam compared to 99.92 percent recorded in last year's exam. The success of Balinese students in 2009's National Examination placed the province's schools in top position across the nation.

"Last year we ranked first at national level. This year, however, we do not know if we can retain that position," he said, adding that the education minister had stated that Bali still fared well compared to other provinces.

"Our pass percentage is still more than 96 percent, that's an indication that the education quality in this province is still strong," he said.

He also disclosed that no region had managed to score a perfect passing percentage this year. In 2009's National Examination, three regions - Gianyar, Bangli and Karangasem - declared that all participating students passed the exam.

Suasta said he regretted the fact that the majority of students who failed to pass the National Examination also unsuccessfully completed the Bahasa Indonesia test. "Seven-hundred-and-sixty-three participants failed the Bahasa Indonesia exam."

The Bahasa Indonesia test was scheduled on the first day of the National Examination period. However, Suasta stressed confusion regarding misplaced test sheets and incomplete test sheets that day was unrelated to the high number of students who failed the Bahasa test.

"Some students admitted that they had focused on subjects they considered more difficult than Bahasa such as mathematics and English. They did not prepare themselves well for the Bahasa exam," he said. "This year's Bahasa test was also more difficult than last year's."

Overall, Putu Siska Andiyani achieved the highest score at the senior high school level in languages. Shelly Silvia Bintang received the highest mark in the science program and A.A. Istri Ngurah Dyah Prami received the highest in social sciences.

At vocational senior high schools, the highest score was achieved by Gusti Ayu Eka Pertiwi from Saraswati Pharmacy School.

The details of the National Examination results will be officially announced Monday. "Students who failed the exam can repeat it from May 10-14," Suasta said.
