ENPASAR: The Bali office of state-owned power company PT PLN wants isle residents to reduce power consumption as the Gilimanuk power plant undergoes scheduled maintenance for the next six weeks.

The plant operated non-stop for 24,000 hours, thus entering a mandatory maintenance period, according to PLN. “We ask the public, including major tourism industry players, to use power sparingly. We will do our best to prevent rolling blackouts,” company spokesperson IGN Agung Mastika said.

To prevent blackouts, the company said it would lease a generator for the Pemaron power plant in Singaraja. Gilimanuk generates 130 megawatts, which is supplemented by other local plants and power from Java to give the island 696 megawatts of power against peak consumption of 600 megawatts.
