Hundreds of houses inundated in Manado

U

p to 2.5-meter-high floodwaters have deluged hundreds of houses in Manado, following 11 hours of incessant rain in the North Sulawesi city on Wednesday.

"The floodwaters reached two meters high in Ternate Tanjung. The roof of our house was submerged in water," said Herry Permata, a local inhabitant of Ternate Tanjung, Singkil, Antara reported.

He said he had to evacuate his children to a safer location and would soon join them.

Singkil sub-district head Herry Saptono reported that more than 200 houses in his area were inundated with 1 to 2.5-meter deep water. He also added that the flood victims had been evacuated, particularly women and children, to higher ground.

Flooding has also hit several parts of Java, Kalimantan and Sumatra.

Several villages in North Musirawas, South Sumatra, have been flooded for the past several days.

The flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall deluged three sub-districts: Rawas Ilir, Karang Dapo and Rupit, reported Sunardin, a spokesman for the North Musirawas sub-district administration, on Wednesday.

The Rawas Ilir sub-district was worst hit by the floods, which inundated hundreds of houses, he added.

The floods also closed several public facilities such as community health centers and schools.

Meanwhile, hundreds of houses in the Teriti and Bekotok areas, Loa Ipuh Village, Kutai Kartanegara district, East Kalimantan, were also flooded, said Darmansyah, the head of the local Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

The BPBD head claimed that the floodwaters affected 880 families or 2,957 residents.

Over the past few days, flooding has also occurred in Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta as a result of heavy rainfall as the rainy season enters its peak.
