lag carrier Garuda Indonesia is going to link Manado, North Sulawesi, with Sorong, West Papua, later this month in a bid to enhance connectivity in the eastern half of Indonesia and improve its services.
Garuda's general manager for Manado, Boydike Kusudiarso, said the airline would begin the flight service on May 20 with a Canadian-made Bombardier CRJ1000 NextGen jet.
"We see huge potential [for the route] between the two cities and we are going to provide flights four times a week starting May 20," Boydike said in Manado on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said that the aircraft would comprise 12 business seats and 84 economy seats.
"Passengers from Sorong or Jayapura [Papua] who want to connect to Balikpapan [East Kalimantan] will find it more convenient to fly through Manado instead of backtraking through Makassar [South Sulawesi]," he added.
Meanwhile, Garuda's manager for Timika, Papua, Dedi Setiadi, said the airline would open a new route, Jakarta-Makassar-Timika to fill the gap left by state-owned airline Merpati Nusantara Airlines.
The new daily flight would be launched on May 15, after Merpati stopped all its flight in eastern Indonesia, Antara reported.
Dedi added that Garuda would also maintain its daily Jakarta-Denpasar-Timika-Jayapura flight. (nfo/nvn)
