ccording to a spokesperson from Dr. Slamet General Hospital in Garut, West Java, there have been 16 deaths since earlier this week after people drank oplosan (bootleg liquor) in the area.
'We are currently treating four patients, with three of them getting better today [Thursday]. The last [the 16th] person died at around 1:45 p.m.,' spokesman Ade Sunarya told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
He said that the patients came from different districts in Garut such as Leles, Wanaraja and Cibatu.
'They said that the name of the [oplosan] brand was Cherrybelle,' he added.
He said that the hospital was committed to providing the best treatment for patients suffering from alcohol poisoning.
Besides Garut, the neighboring city of Sumedang has also seen similar cases, with Sumedang General Hospital spokesman Iman Budiman saying that as many as 80 patients had visited the hospital since Monday due to alcohol poisoning.
'They came with many symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, loss of coordination and unconsciousness,' Iman told the Post, adding that the hospital is currently treating 63 patients. (nfo)(++++)
