Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said the rakyat had the right to choose a government, but should do it through the proper channel.

He said street demonstrations did not reflect the people's power, and that it was wrong to do things that were against the law and constitution.

"Such acts can destroy unity and peace. The people have to suffer and bear the burden if the country is no longer stable.

"We know the people decide the government of the day, and every five years, they are given the power to decide.

"So there is no need to wear a certain colored T-shirt condemning political parties and the Government," he said in his speech after launching the "Festival Rakyat Pasir Salak" here, Friday night.

Najib added that although the government of the day had differing views, its leaders never insulted anyone.

Those who disliked him could stand against him in Pekan in the next general elections, he added.

"Same goes for others leaders as well, if you are not happy with them, stand for election, and when the results are out, we will know whether the rakyat is with the current government or otherwise," he said.

Najib said he was surprised that a certain leader, who during his tenure, had condemned street demonstrations, has how changed his tune and forgotten everything.

"So don't say '€˜Melayu Mudah Lupa'€™ (Malays forget easily), who has forgotten now, the people know," he added.

Najib said people should not be influenced by one or two issues, but should see the overall picture.
