he Yogyakarta provincial administration has bowed to pressure from the Islamic People's Forum (FUI) and moved dozens of Afghan asylum seekers to Semarang after the FUI accused the Afghans of spreading Shia teachings.
'We have advised the immigration office to not let the Afghans remain in Yogyakarta any longer,' Yogyakarta Social, Manpower and Transmigration Agency head Untung Sukaryadi said on Wednesday.
The asylum seekers were being housed in Ambarbinangun Youth Hall in Bantul until FUI members went to the hall on Tuesday night and dispersed them while they were reportedly observing Ashura Day, which marks the anniversary of the death of Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussein, who is considered a Shia imam.
The Law and Human Rights Ministry's Yogyakarta office head, Pramono, said the Afghans had been moved to Semarang as they wait for a third country to accept them.
