Wayan Sudiarta and his wife have been much busier in the last six days. In addition to taking care of their three children, they now care for eight more people in their small rented house on Jl. Cekomaria, Denpasar, including Sudiarta’s mother Nyoman Sututi.

Their guests are among more than 100,000 villagers who were displaced from their homes near Mount Agung, which has been rumbling for a week now.

“The village chief told them to leave their house. So, I decided to pick up my mother and take her to Denpasar,” Sudiarta said.

He was worried that the volcano could erupt at any time, as per authorities’ warnings. But Sudiarta did not only return to Denpasar with his mother, he also brought her neighbors who have nowhere else to go.

“I asked her to come with me as she has no one there,” Sututi said referring to her neighbor.

“It was not a problem at all for me. I am happy I could help them,” Sudiarta said.

Ni Nengah Bunter, one of Sututi’s neighbors, said she was relieved to be given a place to stay in Denpasar.
