onstruction has kicked off in West Java on the first electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Southeast Asia, which is slated to mass-produce LG Energy Solution’s new nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminum (NCMA) lithium-ion battery cell.

The developers of the plant, Hyundai Motor Company and LG Energy Solution, announced in a joint statement that construction was expected to be completed in the first half of 2023, with mass production to begin a year later.

Once fully operational, the facility is expected to annually produce 10 gigawatt hours (GWh) of NCMA battery cells, enough to power approximately 150,000 EVs.

LG Energy Solution president director Jonghyun Kim said the facility would help Indonesia develop an integrated EV supply chain.

"[LG Energy Solution] will develop this joint battery facility as the main base toward the global EV market outside the ASEAN market," he said during the groundbreaking ceremony in Karawang, West Java, on Wednesday.

He added that the NCMA batteries would be installed in various Hyundai Motor and Kia Corporation EVs starting 2024.

LG claims that NCMA batteries have a higher energy density and longer lifespan than nickel, cobalt and manganese (NCM) batteries. This type of battery would also be used in Tesla’s SUV Model Y, South Korea’s Business Korea reported.
