akarta’s photography enthusiasts are likely familiar with the names Metro Atom Plaza and Harco, two camera emporia located side by side in Pasar Baru, one of the oldest shopping centers in Jakarta.
Students, professional photographers and collectors hunt among the many cameras here – whether analog or digital – and their respective accessories.
The two markets have long bought, sold and repaired cameras at competitive prices. Many photography enthusiasts frequently visit them.
“I’ve run a business in Harco since 1977,” said Harry, the owner of the Harpa camera shop, which buys, sells and repairs cameras. “However, the fire that razed Harco in 1977 prompted me to move here [to Metro Atom Plaza].”
But the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a significant drop in visitors. Many camera shops have halted their operations. To keep his business going, Harry uses the services of ojek (app-based motorbike taxis) for the delivery of goods. “The business is not bad. It’s enough to survive in this difficult time,” he said.
