e are all in the same storm. This stark reality hits us as we walk through the exhibition hall of Erasmus Huis Jakarta, in which vivid pictures and videos by renowned Dutch photographer Kadir van Lohuizen transport us to cities and coastal areas overwhelmed by water.
These graphic images flaunt inundated buildings and houses, capturing forlorn expressions of people grappling with their uncertain future amid the surging seas.
The sound of crashing waves reverberating through the exhibition hall heightens the urgency of this climate crisis.
Hailing from the capital of the Netherlands, van Lohuizen has traveled extensively across Europe, the North Atlantic, the United States and the Asia Pacific, documenting the human impacts of rising sea levels.
Van Lohuizen’s powerful visuals have been showcased in renowned museums worldwide, including the Maritime Museum of San Diego, the Museum of the City of New York and the Dutch National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam.
Erasmus Huis Jakarta is hosting Van Lohuizen’s work in an exhibition titled “Rising Tide: The Human Consequences of Rising Sea Levels”, which runs until Aug. 3.
“Kadir van Lohuizen seeks to shed light on the irreversible force of climate change,” Jaef de Boer, deputy head of culture and communication of Erasmus Huis Jakarta, said on the opening night on May 21.
