Yearender: 2022’s five exceptional local applications

A list of must-download local apps that answer everybody’s unique needs, from financial management to veterinary services.

The year 2022 saw an increasing number of new applications created by local talents. Here are five applications to download, ranging from financial management to digital-health ecosystem for pets.

Enevti

Enevti is a social media and non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace. The application allows creators to interact with fellow creators and buyers through their chat features. For example, buyers of NFT can make a video call and get an exclusive present from the NFT creator.

Enevti also has a feature called Creator Finance, where fans can support their favorite creators through “staking”. It allows fans to deposit a cryptocurrency in a blockchain network and receive rewards for not selling the cryptocurrency while staked. As such, fans will be rewarded the token along with the royalty from the sold NFT creator.

The application is developed by Jakarta-based 27-year-old lawyer Aldo Suhartono Putra, who recently won the most-innovative social-media CEO at the Asia-Pacific (APAC) Insider CEO of the year 2022.

“When the [Picture of Proof] PFP market fell, the access and utility of NFTs actually increased by 13 percent. This presentation means that utility is increasingly relevant for the NFT industry in the future,” Aldo said. PFP is a generative-avatar artwork designed to be displayed as a person's social-media profile picture.

Enevti is available to download by individuals joining Discord and will be available on the App Store for iOS users and Play Store for Android users.

Hewania

Hewania is a digital-health ecosystem founded by Adam Kustiadi Nugraha, Richard Nathaniel Chandra and Andry Febriansyah with a mission to simplify access to healthcare by connecting millions of pet owners with licensed veterinarians. The application allows pet owners to have an online consultation with the best vet while staying at home.

Many pet owners found difficulties in getting animal-health solutions as the limited number of veterinarians are not evenly distributed throughout the regions in Indonesia. Pet owners thus often have to queue for a long time at the veterinary clinic, especially when they come to the practice of a well-known or senior veterinarian.

Through Hewania, pet owners can consult online with partner veterinarians and receive suggestions whether they need to come to the onsite or offsite veterinary clinic. They can also receive immediate advice on managing their access and curated contents providing information on pets’ health and behavior.

Hewania also gives recommendations on reputable vet products, which can be delivered directly to the pet owner's location. Hewania is currently available on App Store and Play Store.

SayaKaya

SayaKaya is a wealth-management application focusing on online mutual-fund trading and investments. Users can start investing from Rp100,000 (US$6.38) and in gold safely. The products available under this application are guaranteed thanks to asset diversification's feature.

Jessica Wijaya, the CEO and cofounder of the app shared that users of the application can also consult about the type of investment that fits their portfolio.

The application features an investment calculator for investors to evaluate their goals. In 2023, the application will offer more features, such as wealth management and robo-advisor, for short, mid and long term that will be verified automatically.

Indonesia is still dominated by individuals who do not understand the importance of investment. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) in 2019 reported that the Indonesian financial literacy rate was still at 38.03 percent, showing that people still had low levels of knowledge about finance and investment. Satgas Waspada Investasi (SWI), a coordination forum for government and private institutions in the finance and investment sector, recorded that Indonesia has lost a total of Rp123.5 trillion due to fake investment.

Through SayaKaya, Jessica thus aims to educate more people about the importance of investment and prevent them from joining fake investments. The application is now available on App Store and Play Store.

PetaNetra

PetaNetra is a navigation application using augmented reality (AR) technology meant for visually impaired individuals when doing indoor activities. The application uses voice-cover technology to help convey information.

Felicia Stevanie Ulaan, a 22-year-old user interface designer, develops the application with her other three peers: Graciela Gabrielle Angeline, Jessi Febria and Yafonia Hutabarat. They met at the Apple Academy in 2021. Felica and her peers are inspired by Graciela’s mother, who has been visually impaired since falling at a bus stop in Jakarta back in 2013.

A study conducted by Monash University in 2017 reported that 80 percent of those who reported vision impairment in Indonesia did not have glasses, and 28 percent of those who needed a cane did not have one. PetaNetra’s research in 2021 also found that approximately seven out of 10 visually impaired individuals in Jakarta have experienced accidents while navigating public space.

PetraNetra currently works with TransJakarta to create a safer public space for the visually impaired. Felicia and her peers also plan to collaborate with other offices across Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia to create a more-inclusive space for disabled individuals. Felicia thus hopes for PetraNetra to “have the support from various building owners”.

The application is available to download on the App Store and will be available on the Play Store next year.

Fasih

Fasih is an application designed to help individuals with hearing impairment practice their job interviews. The application is developed by Evelyn Wijaya, Verenne Tanara, Stefan Adisurya, Nico Christian, Gilbert Nicholas, Ghirlandaio Hidayat and Karina.

The cofounders of the application realized that inclusivity at the workplace in Indonesia is relatively low. There is at least one individual with congenital deafness in every 1,000 births in Indonesia as the University of Airlangga, Surabaya, East Java, reported in 2020, yet there are not many services that support individuals with disabilities.

“One of our cofounders’ cousins is deaf and she shared how deaf individuals have their own hurdle in finding a job. Based on our research, many deaf individuals have good competence, but are unable to get a job placement,” Evelyn said.

Fasih has three main features. The first one helps users to practice interview questions in STAR (situation, task, action, result) structure. The application also gives users the option to practice their answers through speaking directly or using Indonesian sign language. Lastly, the application allows users to practice spoken speech.

These features are expected to assist deaf users in improving their confidence and managing their stress when answering difficult questions from recruiters.

Fasih is currently available on the App Store and will be available on the Play Store next year.
