A

total of 300 people from Palembang, Padang, Karimun, Batam, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore attended Mata Kail Batam Boat Fishing Tournament that was held in Abang Island and Petong Island, Batam on Nov.11

These two islands are the perfect location for a fishing tournament since they offer many varieties of fish such as kerapu (epinephelus), kakap merah (northern red snapper), pasir merah and tenggiri (wahoo).

Participants were required to use pompong boat for fishing, pompong  is a traditional boat used by the fishermen. However, due to the overcapacity at the dock, the committee had to limit the number of participants.

Tourism Minister Arief Yahya thinks a tourism-aware community should be given space and supported so that they can deliver creative events. "This can be a good example of C's function (community) in the Pentahelix's ABCGM (Academics, Business, Community, Government and Media)."

“This is what we are encouraging, we make people realize that tourism is a quick way to nurture a sustainable economy,” told Tourism Ministry’s archipelago tourism marketing development deputy Esthy Reko Astuti. (asw)
