owadays, businesses have been increasingly using highly complex applications to deal with enormous combinations of insight as well as workflow and information systems to create a much more effective and efficient business operations.

Such applications are difficult to deploy with legacy IT infrastructure, since the traditional technologies are far too limited and poorly distributed.

Therefore, they require the use of cloud-native computing systems, which allow information to be distributed over multiple locations from central servers without direct active management from the user.

According to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, through the innovative features and the zero downtime offered by cloud-native technologies, they can empower organizations to build and run scalable applications in modern and dynamic environments such as the public, private and hybrid clouds.

“With these loosely coupled systems that are resilient, manageable and observable combined with robust automation, they allow engineers to make high-impact changes frequently and predictable with minimum toil,” the foundation says in its statement.

Thanks to the advantages mentioned above, the use of the cloud-native technology to manage these applications can benefit businesses in terms of boosting their operations’ cost efficiency, speed, productivity, performance, reliability and security.

Furthermore, the cloud technology system allows you to expand your operations more flexibly with more remote working and management options in a cost-effective yet secure way.

In this context, the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted businesses to strive to be more competitive, agile and high-performing than ever before in order to swiftly adjust to all the changes brought by the current global health crisis, by offering new services and altering their business operations at the same time.

This unprecedented transformation process will be much easier to achieve when businesses apply sophisticated management applications powered by the cloud-native system.

The cloud- native system is designed to support businesses’ digital transform rapidly and skyrocket by quickly absorbing large workloads and information for rapid analysis, generating valuable insights to find new opportunities during the crises of the times.

The 2020 edition of the Alibaba 11.11 Global Shopping Festival (some still call it Single’s Day), is the perfect example of how cloud-native systems enable companies to skyrocket their business operations to the clouds in no time.

In case you have not heard of the event before, the online shopping festival is the biggest online shopping event in the world. With the participation of 250,000 brands and 800 million consumers in 2020, it has generated US$74.1 billion in gross merchandise value throughout.

Yet the event’s commercial prowess is almost impossible to achieve without the help of cloud-native technologies.

How did the cloud-native databases do the magic trick? The Alibaba Cloud’s robust and resilient system allowed real-time processing of enormous amounts of data simultaneously during the festival.

For example, MaxCompute, Alibaba’s data warehousing platform, handled 1.7 exabytes (an exabyte is equal to 1 billion gigabytes) of data per day during the 11-day shopping festival. Alibaba Cloud’s PolarDB, a cloud-native database, meanwhile, processed 140 million queries per second during peak time. Its AnalyticsDB, Alibaba’s self-developed cloud-native data warehouse, processed up to 7.7 trillion lines of real-time data.

Combined together, the PolarDB-X and AnalyticDB helped China’s postal office and logistics services provider China Post, the online festival’s official partner, deal with more than 100 million orders during the festival.

Various financial technology (fintech) companies in Indonesia have also adopted the Alibaba Cloud Container Service for their operations. For instance, marketplace lending platform Investree has deployed its applications on Alibaba Cloud Container Service for Kubernetes, a cloud-native container platform for complex applications.

At the same time, DANA has been able to leverage the same applications to help the fintech company conduct auto-scaling of their computing resources, which are adjustable to different circumstances. For instance, they can tweak the system to make sure they have sufficient resources to support some applications' operations during high transaction periods.

These concrete examples showcase how the very architecture of cloud-native solutions, based on microservices and containers powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning, makes it possible for local businesses to create critical and complex applications to expand their operational capacities.

"We're excited to see the strong demand of cloud-native technology in Indonesia. We have been introducing cloud-native proprietary technology to the market over the past year, such as PolarDB, AnalyticDB, and Alibaba Cloud Container Service for Kubernetes. Moving forward, we are planning to introduce more leading cloud-native technologies to support customers' accelerated digital transformation demands in 2021," said Leon Chen, general manager of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence in Indonesia.

Within the context of major commercial events, such as the 2020 11.11 Global Shopping Festival, the issue of data management and processing becomes obviously crucial. Against such challenge, cloud-native products such as cloud-native data warehouse and database provide unprecedented capacity to process huge volumes of data in an instant.

Again, traditional warehouses cannot possibly perform this kind of process, even when you store them in the cloud. The administration times and the simple issue of license management of such traditional systems would make this task insurmountable.

The use of cloud-native technology also provides increased resilience and ensures business continuity.

Cloud native is about speed and agility. Business systems are evolving from enabling business capabilities to being the drivers of strategic transformation that accelerate business velocity and growth. It's imperative to get ideas to the market immediately.
