ndonesia made a slight improvement in its competitiveness to attract and retain talent in the country’s economy this year, which marks a turnaround after two years of declining rankings.

This was according to an annual benchmarking report the Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTCI), which measures how countries and cities grow, attract and retain talent.

The report showed Indonesia’s ranking stood at 80th place this year from a total of 134 countries. It marks an improvement from its ranking of 82nd last year, having previously declined from 80th in 2021 and 65th in 2020, according to the report.

This year, the index sees Indonesia having strengthened its enabling environment and its ability to retain talent, as well as having made particular strides in vocational and technical skills.

For each pillar assessed in this year’s report, Indonesia scored best in its enabling environment, which measures the regulatory and market landscape, followed by the grow category which measures education and learning and in its vocational and technical skills. The country ranked 58th, 64th and 65th, respectively in these categories.

It scored the worst in attracting talent and its global knowledge skills, with the latter measuring high-level skills and the country’s talent’s impact on innovation, software development and high-value exports, among many other things. Indonesia ranked 106th and 100th, respectively.
