DBYTE, Indonesia’s leading biennial networking event, has wrapped up its first post-pandemic event focusing on art and fashion.

Organized by digital agency Bubu.com with the full support of the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, IDBYTE Art + Fashion 2023 discussed technology, art, fashion and collaboration in a full-day conference on Oct. 21 at Pacific Place mall in South Jakarta.

Themed “Impact”, the discussion was part of a weeklong collaborative exhibition between Indonesia’s young artists and fashion designers that ran from Oct. 16 to 22.

"IDBYTE's DNA is technology, and this time our theme of IDBYTE Art + Fashion 2023 is where fashion [serves] as a work of art to express thoughts. We also hope to increase collaborations that can have an impact in the fields of art and fashion," said Shinta Dhanuwardoyo, the CEO founder of Bubu.com.

In its sixth edition, Saturday’s discussion at IDBYTE Art + Fashion featured speakers Lilith NYC founder and former Nike product director Sarah Sukumaran, Mobilium Global CEO Ralph Simon, of FR2 (Fxxking Rabbits) CEO Ryo Ishikawa and Rahfeal Gordon, owner of Madison + Park marketing agency and a published author. That session concluded with a networking dinner, where attendees had an opportunity to catch up with the speakers.

Ahead of the discussion, Lilith NYC’s Sarah said she looked forward to meaningful conversations about the importance of female leadership in the art and fashion industries.

She also expressed her excitement over the opportunity to share her experience as a female founder of a footwear brand in the male-dominated luxury sector, referring to a recent finding that a majority of creative directors at certain luxury companies were all white men.

"It's important for luxury houses to make space and allow women and people of color [POC] to lead these brands, especially when women and POC are driving trends around fashion, culture and art," she said.

As part of IDBYTE’s commitment to environmental sustainability, this year’s art and fashion conference used the CarbonShare platform to balance its emissions footprint, including CarbonShare certification for the event’s speakers.

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said art and fashion continued to evolve as technology developed. One example of this was in digital art, which was relatively young compared to other genres.

"I hope that in the future, Indonesian people can be open to how wide the world of art and fashion is, [as is] their contribution to Indonesia's tourism sector and creative economy," he said.

LabX, a collaborative agency that is part of Bubu.com, encouraged collaboration between art and fashion through Bandung-based fashion label Machine56 and Japanese streetwear brand #FR2. This collaboration resulted in a unique rabbit helmet designed by Machine56’s Rajaya Yogaswara, which was unveiled to the public for the first time during the IDBYTE exhibition at Pacific Place.

The exhibit also featured graffiti art by Cyril Kongo, handwoven traditional textiles by Cita Tenun Indonesia, a collection by Asha Smara Darra and Redmiller Blood from designer Oscar Lawalata and a reworked coat created in a collaboration between Diana Rikasari and Yogyakarta-based artist Novan “VamVam” Cahaya.
