The  game that hooked millions of cat lovers is finally getting its own live-action film.

The upcoming movie, entitled “House of Neko Atsume,” is set to screen in Japanese theaters next year, according to a report from Siliconera. It is based on the viral smartphone app pioneered by Hit-Point back in 2014.

The thrilling plot circles around superstar author Katsu Sakumoto, played by Atsushi Ito, struggling with an oddly serious case of writer’s block. He then drives to the countryside and sights a stray feline whom he constantly feeds until he adopts it. Since then, Sakumoto collects a dozen of cats and bonds with them.

The cat-collecting game allows players to lure litters of kittens by feeding them with yummy cat food, spoiling them with toys, and offering them furniture. Some of the cats have high ranks and a special diet that the player has to prepare.

House of Neko Atsume” will be produced by MediAnd and directed by Masatoshi Kurakata.
