If there’s one TV show everyone has heard of since the late 1980s, it is The Simpsons.
It is probably also the show our grandchildren will still be watching – with brand new episodes – in the decades to come.
On Nov 4, Fox announced that it was renewing The Simpsons for two more seasons. This means that the cartoon, currently in its 28th season, is set to have a total of 669 episodes under its belt by the end of its 30th season. The number surpasses that of Gunsmoke‘s record, which stood at 635 for many years.
Created in 1989, The Simpsons is now effectively the record holder for the “scripted US TV series with the most number of episodes”!

In an official statement from Fox, relayed to everyone via Homer Simpson, the character says: “Take that Gunsmoke! You lost a race you didn’t even know you were running!”
The Simpsons will actually break Gunsmoke‘s record during S29, which is scheduled to start airing next year.
“This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series,” said Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen and CEOs of the Fox Television Group, in the statement. “The Simpsons has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of executive producers Matt, Jim and Al.” (That’s creator Matt Groening, show developer James L. Brooks and writer Al Jean.)
Live long and doh.
