A

unique service in Semarang, Central Java, allows the public to make their waste into something useful and at the same time help save the environment.

Named Sampah Muda, the online-based platform is set to help manage its users’ rubbish and turn them into other objects.

Those interested in using the service can register on the website. After making a request, the platform’s agent will pick up the users’ discarded items, weigh them using a digital scale and then exchange it for money that can also be donated.

Do note that users are asked to classify the type of garbage first because Sampah Muda only takes inorganic waste, such as HVS papers, newspapers, carton boxes, plastic bottles, plastic glasses and other types of plastic.

Launched last year by students from Semarang State Polytechnic, Sampah Muda has received more than 27 kilograms of trash, served more than 1,000 people and paid around Rp 29 million (US$2,146) to users.

According to kompas.com, the money received by the users would be transferred electronically. “It can also be used to buy phone credit [online], top up their GoPay account and buy electricity tokens,” said Ferrindo Tito, one of the website’s founders.

On average, the price for 1 kg of garbage starts from Rp 700 (less than 1 cent) to Rp 3,000. However, although there is no minimum amount of garbage that can be picked up by Sampah Muda’s agent, it is suggested that the public have at least five to 10 kg of waste prior to using the service.

“We’re still developing this website. It was offline two years ago,” said Ferri. “Later on, we will develop it into an app so it can be downloaded on the PlayStore.” (wir/kes)
